The Weight We Carry: A Heartfelt Reminder for Helpers and Advocates

An anonymous submission from a college sophomore, and the wildest advice column responses we've ever gotten.

Every day, people step into roles where they are asked to care for others. Case managers. Advocates. Counselors. Teachers. Nurses. Community workers. Caregivers. They become the person others call when things feel impossible.

They help put out fires, connect people to resources, listen to stories of hardship, and carry pieces of someone elseโ€™s struggles long after the conversation ends.

Sometimes we forget that behind every helping hand is a person with their own heart, their own worries, and their own life.

Those who serve others often become many things at once:

  • A guide.
  • A protector.
  • A problem solver.
  • A listening ear.
  • A source of hope.

They show up as advocates, doctors, therapists, sisters, brothers, mothers, fathers, and friends โ€” often giving more than anyone realizes.

But caring deeply comes with a cost.

When you spend your days carrying the weight of others, it is important to remember that you cannot pour from an empty cup.

Rest is not selfish. Boundaries are not a lack of compassion. Taking care of yourself allows you to continue caring for others.

If you are someone who helps others every day, consider creating small moments to refill your own cup:

โ˜• Take a quiet moment before going home. ๐ŸŒธ Talk with someone who supports you. ๐Ÿ“– Continue learning and growing. ๐ŸŒฟ Spend time doing something that brings you peace. ๐Ÿ’— Remember that you are a person before you are a helper.

The world needs compassionate people โ€” but compassionate people need care too.

At The Pink Manor, we want to remind every helper, advocate, and caregiver:

You are allowed to receive the same kindness you give to others.
